Prior Repairs to facade at left pilaster
Note the prior repairs that start immediately below the capstone of the left parapet and run down the right side of the left pilaster and then follow the pilaster toward the ground. Note that similar prior repairs exist on the right side or the right pilaster and follow the same pattern. Seems like the building is pulling away toward the outside corners. Mark, can you comment? Comments:
1. John, I'm really concerned about this. This crack as can be seen in color differential of prior repair mortar runs all the way down the right side of the left pilaster to about 4 feet or so above ground level. See link here http://share.gigapan.org/viewConversation.php?id=75155&auth=385a825d47bda95bfc4c2c8209f9255f Also the center facade crack jumps the windows and angles toward the left pilaster. http://share.gigapan.org/viewConversation.php?id=75154&auth=385a825d47bda95bfc4c2c8209f9255f The right pilaster is not as bad. What's going on here. Is my building going to collapse? (Alan Jones, owner)
2. Alan, None of these prior repairs are failing. As I recall no one can recall in living memory when the last masonry repairs were made. So these repairs are over 30 years old, maybe as many as 50 years old, and they are not failing. So I think we are in good shape. This is probably just natural building settling after construction. Construction techniques were not as sophisticated then in terms of going to the bedrock for the foundation. So I'm guessing this is post-construction settling that occurred in the first decade or two after construction. I'd like to get a confirmation from the engineer about this. Todd can you comment?
